Investigators from the Citrus County Sheriff's Office are trying to unravel a mystery.

Human remains were found deep in the woods off of S Mason Creek Road and S Garcia Road in Homosassa. Now, detectives are working to figure out who they belong to and what happened.

According to authorities, the bones were discovered deep in the woods Monday afternoon near South Mason Creek Road and South Garcia Road. Crime scene investigators and Medical Examiner's Office personnel are working to identify the remains.

They don't think foul play was involved.

"We are basically treating it very seriously (with a) very methodical process, taking away layer by layer to make sure we get all and any evidence in this case," said Lt. Brad Smith.

Smith said it's too early to tell how old the person was at the time of death and whether the bones are that of a male or female.
