The 12-year-old son of a Bradenton orthopedic surgeon was killed in his home elevator shaft Saturday while looking for his pet hamster, authorities said.

Maxwell Grablin had gone into the shaft in the home on the 1110 block of Palma Sola Boulevard around to search for the pet. He suffered fatal injuries when the elevator lowered from above, the Manatee County Sheriff's Office said.

Paramedics and fire rescue personnel pronounced the child dead at the scene, and deputies responded at 11:24 a.m.

Maxwell's father, Dr. Patrick Grablin, was home at the time of the accident, authorities said.

Patrick Grablin operates Grablin Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Medicine at 530 5th Street E and has been in practice in Bradenton since 1997. According to the practice's website, Dr. Grablin also trains and mentors students at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Bradenton.
