A bicyclist riding against traffic on an dark stretch of highway was struck by a car and killed Monday night, Haines City police said.

The bicyclist, whose identity was not released, was riding north in the south lanes of U.S. 17-92 at Lee Jackson Highway around 6:30 p.m., police said.

Francis Gulzinski, 65, of Haines City was southbound in a Ford Mustang and was not able to stop in time after spotting the cyclist, police said. The Mustang struck the bicycle, throwing the rider against the windshield and roof of the car.

The cyclist was transported to Heart of Florida Regional Hospital, where he later died.

Neither speed nor impairment appear to be factors in the crash, police said.
