One person was killed in a large explosion and fire that destroyed a Sarasota house on Thursday night.

Firefighters and deputies responded to the fire at 2141 Cork Oak Street in the Colonial Oaks subdivision around 9:30 p.m. They extinguished the fire, but weren't able to immediately say whether anyone was inside.

Friday morning, officials confirmed that one person died, but they did not say whether they believed anyone else had been inside.

Deputies and firefighters are walking the neighborhood to collect any items in the debris field.

Positive identification of the victim is pending completion of the autopsy by the Medical Examiner.

The State Fire Marshal, Sarasota County Sheriff's Office and Sarasota County Fire Department are investigating.
