A dog and her four puppies were rescued from a garbage can by officers, Tampa police said.

According to Tampa police, officers from the Tampa Police Department and Hillsborough Animal Services found the dogs in the 2200 block of 10th Street N.

Officials said one of the puppies was in a plastic bag that had been thrown in the garbage, while the other three puppies were under a shed.

The mother dog was on top of the garbage can trying to get her puppy out, police said.

"We don’t know if she was successful in getting the other three out of the can and under the shed, but she sure was trying to get that last one out," Tampa police spokesperson Andrea Davis said.

The investigation continues.
