A Winter Haven man survived a horrific crash Tuesday evening in which his sports car slid off a wet road, struck a tree and split in two.
Around 7 p.m., 20-year-old Carlos Pino lost control of his 1986 Nissan 300ZX on westbound Cypress Gardens Boulevard at the curves near Interlochen Boulevard.
Pino over-corrected and the car went into a sideways slide, striking a curb and leaving the road. It then crashed into a tree at the driver's-side front quarter-panel, police said.
The impact broke the car in two and left the front engine compartment on one side of the tree and the cab with Pino buckled in on the other side.
Pino was airlifted to Lakeland Regional Health with non-life-threatening injuries.
The wet roadway and speed appear to have been factors in the crash, police said. An investigation is underway and charges are pending.
