Citrus County was honored as a Purple Heart County on Monday.

County Commissioner Ronald E. Kitchen gathered with members of the Aaron A. Weaver Chapter 776 Military Order of the Purple Heart on Monday to celebrate the Purple Heart designation given to Citrus County.

Road signs have been permanently displayed at all entrances to the County recognizing the honor.

County Commissioners presented a proclamation at their regular meeting on August 25 recognizing the county with the Purple Heart honor. The Purple Heart is a combat award exclusively for those members of the Armed Forces of the United States who are killed, died of wounds or wounded by an enemy instrument of war.

The Purple Heart flag is flown at the Lecanto Government Building and at the Citrus County Courthouse.
