The St. Petersburg Police Department responded to a pedestrian being hit Tuesday around 2:30 p.m. on 9th Ave. N.

  • David Roundtree, 72, died at local hospital
  • Crash occurred when he was setting up school zone cones
  • Charles Hunter Walton, 21, was charged with DUI manslaughter

The driver who hit him, according to police, was charged with DUI manslaughter.

Officials said David Roundtree, 72, the school crossing guard for Mt. Vernon Elementary, was setting up his school zone cones when he was hit by a vehicle.

A witness said a silver Toyota Scion was driving erratically and hit a pickup truck before striking Roundtree.

The driver also hit a school zone sign and a small tree and kept going several blocks, police said.

Officials said Roundtree was pronounced dead at the hospital. He had been a crossing guard for three years. No one else was injured in the accident.

The driver of the Toyota, Charles Hunter Walton, 21, was charged with DUI manslaughter. The 18-year-old passenger in Walton's car was not charged.
