A 72-year-old Plant City man who was shot multiple times in his own driveway is out of the hospital and on the mend.

"I'm doing good, really I am. I'm blessed," said John Barnes.

On Thursday night, Barnes was coming home from the gym about 11:30 p.m.

When he pulled into his driveway on Allen Street, three masked men ambushed him and tried to rob him.

Barnes ran to escape and he was shot in the stomach and in the foot.

"I try to keep my place up nice and then somebody comes and just tries to destroy me," he said.

Barnes has lived in the neighborhood for 30 years and said he's never had problems before.

"Everybody around here knows me, I don't understand. I don't bother anybody. I go to the gym, I walk, I go to church and I don't carry on," Barnes said.

Barnes is facing foot surgery and months of physical therapy and recovery but he's thankful the bullets didn't do more damage.

"It's a blessing, really it is. I could have been killed but God was just with me," he said. "You know, miracles don't happen everybody but this was one."

Plant City Police are still looking for the suspects in this case.
