An elderly couple in Citrus County was busted for having 65 dogs at their Homosassa home.

  • 65 dogs seized from Citrus County home
  • Couple was being monitored as dog breeders
  • Couple hid dozens of dogs from law enforcement
  • Couple admitted to needing to turn dogs over for better care
  • No criminal charges being filed

The couple was being monitored regulary as dog breeders that just barely met the minimum standards for care. During that time, animal control was only aware of 18 dogs at the home. Officials said dozens of dogs were kept hidden from law enforcement during checkups.

It wasn't until the husband had a medical issue, and emergency crews were called to the home, that more dogs were found. The responding emergency crews called law enforcement when they witnessed the conditions inside the home.

Officials said it was deplorable inside the home, and not healthy for the homeowners or the dogs. The woman admitted she was overwhelmed and needed to turn over the dogs. The couple signed papers surrendering 65 dogs, mostly purebred Rat Terriers, to Animal Control, officials said.

Officials said because of their cooperation, criminal charges will not be filed. Animal control officers will continue to monitor the situation for their continued compliance.

Officials said the dogs will be up for adoption once they are medically cleared.
