Florida State University issued an "indefinite interim" suspension of all fraternities and sororities after a student was found dead at a pledge party Friday.

FSU President John Thrasher made the announcement in a news conference Monday.

Andrew Coffey, 20, of Pompano Beach was a member of Pi Kappa Phi fraternity, living off campus.

Paramedics say they found Coffey unresponsive when they arrived at an off-campus pledge party and were unable to revive him, but it's not clear yet what happened.

Pi Kappa Phi suspended all chapter operations and told members of the FSU chapter to cooperate with the investigation.

In an unrelated case Monday, Garrett John Marcy, 20, was arrested and charged with cocaine trafficking. Marcy is a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity.

Thrasher said in the Monday news conference that there was a serious problem, and he wanted to send a serious message.

“For this suspension to end, there will need to be a new normal for Greek Life at the university,” he said. “There must be a new culture, and our students must be full participants in creating it.”

Thrasher also instituted a ban on alcohol at all student organization events, which will last as long as the suspension lasts. FSU says that includes more than 700 organizations outside the Greek community.

During the suspensation fraternity and sorority chapters will be barred from holding new member events, council or chapter meetings, or other events. Residents will be allowed to remain in their houses.

Any students or groups that fail to comply with the rules of the suspension will face immediate disciplinary action, FSU said.

Meanwhile, the Division of Student Affairs will be working on new measures to "redefine" the Greek community.
