A recent University of Tampa graduate is headed to Africa this summer.

Ashley Peiffer, 21, is volunteering with the Peace Corps.

"It just felt like the right thing to do," Peiffer said.

The Peace Corps is a volunteer program run by the United States to provide assistance and promote cultural understanding. Volunteers serve in more than 60 countries.

Peiffer volunteered to teach science in Tanzania for the next two years. Her mother said it's a perfect fit.

"She just always loved to help others," said her mom, Rebekah Dreese.

This will be Peiffer's first trip out of the country. She said applying for the Peace Corps was the easiest decision she ever made. Ashley has wanted to be part of the volunteer program since she was 10 years old.

"People keep asking me if I'm scared. I'm not. I'm just ready," Peiffer said.

Peiffer leaves for Peace Corps training next month.
