CRYSTAL RIVER, Fla. -- Citrus County residents spent part of their Sunday picking up sandbags in preparation for a potential storm surge and flooding from Alberto.

  • Dozens of residents pick up sandbags in Citrus County
  • Many were worried about potential flooding from Alberto

It was busy at the sandbag pickup location in Crystal River.

Dozens of people stopped by to pick up their sandbags. Many were concerned about flooding after suffering damage in Hurricane Hermine less than two years ago.

For many Citrus County residents, picking up sandbags before storms has become a routine. But for Bob Quigley, it's still new.

"We've been exposed to it once," Quigley said. "We're going to try to avoid it again in the future."

His family's home was one of several that flooded in 2016 after Hurricane Hermine. They were out of their house for a year because of it.

"We took no precautions at that point because we had no idea what was coming down the pike," Quigley said.

Now, he said they aren't taking any chances.

"It's like bringing an umbrella on a sunny day you hope it's not going to rain that's why you bring the umbrella," he said. "We are putting sandbags in to hope that it's not going to happen."

Other residents said sandbags helped keep their homes safe in big storms like Hermine and Irma, so they always try to keep a few on hand.

"We had the storm last year. I come over here again. It helped out a lot because it kept the water out of my garage," Le Jennings said.
