ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- The 51-year-old man involved in a motor scooter crash Monday afternoon in St. Petersburg has died.

St. Pete police announced Tuesday that Michael Cardinal died just after midnight from his injuries. 

Cardinal was riding the scooter westbound on 36th Avenue North near 16th Street just after 5 p.m. when the crash happened. Police said Cardinal stopped at a stop sign then moved forward and failed to yield to a northbound Hyundai sedan, which struck the scooter.

Officers said Cardinal was not wearing a helmet. He was transported to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg where he later died. 

The 61-year-old male driver of the Hyundai was not injured. He stopped at the scene and has been cooperating. 

The crash remains under investigation.
