BROOKSVILLE, Fla. — The main Brooksville library in downotwn Brooksville was closed Monday after someone broke in through the roof over the weekend.

  • Sheriff's Office investigating incident
  • Holes cut in roof left library vulnerable to weekend rains
  • Staff hopeful library can re-open Tuesday

“I was kind of shocked that they were closed, 'cause they’re never really closed except holidays. My kids were disappointed,” Amber Barrett said.

Staff members were notified of the facility’s alarm going off around 9 a.m. Saturday.

They said at least one person broke into the library by cutting a hole in the roof and leaving several holes in the ceiling.

"The rain over the weekend also caused us to have books damaged," Branch Services Coordinator Jessica Jeffers said. "Reference items that are irreplaceable.”

Right now, Jeffers tells us they don’t believe anything was taken.

“I was amazed and just kind of dumbfounded at who would put this much effort into this,” she explained.

Crews were busy Monday working to get all the holes repaired both inside and outside. They hope to have the library back open Tuesday.

“It ultimately damages our public," Jeffers said. "We have people that are meeting here, people that come in daily to use us for computer access to search for jobs, and just in general come in here for a bit of solace."

The Hernando County Sheriff's Office is investigating the incident. As of Monday evening, they have not named any suspects.
