PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. -- The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office said an arrest has been made in two bank robberies that happened in 2016.

  • Joseph Robert Carter, 47, taken into custody Thursday
  • Bank robberies occurred in June, September of 2016
  • Fingerprints from Georgia arrest used to ID Carter in bank robberies

Joseph Robert Carter, 47, of Dalton, Ga., has been charged with two counts of robbery, the Sheriff's Office said Friday.

The robberies happened on June 24 and Sept. 9, 2016, at the Jefferson Bank of Florida on U.S. Highway 19 North in Palm Harbor.

In each case, according to detectives, Carter was given an undisclosed amount of cash.

Deputies said Carter was recently arrested by police in Dalton, Ga., and charged with operating a vehicle without a valid license.

On Sept. 4, the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office received a match from Carter's fingerprints that were obtained in Georgia.

An arrest warrant was obtained, and Carter was taken into custody Thursday.

Deputies said Dalton admitted to the robberies and said he did it "because of a drug habit."

He will be extradicted to the Pinellas County Jail.
