TAMPA, Fla. — A motorcyclist was killed early Friday in a crash on the Courtney Campbell Causeway. 

According to Tampa police, the crash happened at 3:30 a.m. when a motorcyclist struck the back of a car in the westbound lanes on the Pinellas side of the causeway.

The motorcyclist, identified as 29-year-old Nathaniel N. Varnadore of Largo, died at Mease Countryside Hospital as a result of his injuries. 

The 58-year-old driver of the car was taken to Mease Dunedin as a precaution. 

The lanes were closed several hours Friday morning before reopening just after 7:30 a.m.
