TAMPA, Fla. — Dozens of voter registration drives were set up at libraries and schools throughout the Bay area Tuesday — National Voter Registration Day — to sign up new voters.

  • One item on November ballot directly affecting Hillsborough schools
  • Voters will vote on half-cent sales tax for school improvements
  • Deadline to register for November election is October 9

One such event was held during lunch time at Gaither High School, 16200 N. Dale Mabry, in Tampa.

Gaither Senior President Haley Zarcone, 18, said she plans to register to vote in the November election.

"I really want to just put my input out there as much as I can," Zarcone said.

This year, there's one item on the ballot that would directly impact students at Gaither and other Hillsborough County schools.

A referendum will be on the ballot asking voters to approve a half-cent sales tax for school improvements in Hillsborough County.

Gaither High principal Thomas Morrill said he hopes students who can vote will understand the need and cast a ballot.

"They’ll see the connection between the needs of the school and going to school and hopefully things will work out," said Morill said.

There is still time to register for the November election. The deadline is October 9.

You must be 18 years old to vote, but you can pre-register at 16 years old.
