BARTOW, Florida — A junior varsity football player was airlifted to a hospital after police said players from two teams were fighting during a game.

The game took place Thursday night between Bartow High School and Lakeland High School.

Police were called to the scene after receiving reports of players fighting.

"Staff with both schools worked to restore order and separate those students involved," the Bartow Police Department said in a news release Friday.

The student, from Bartow High School, remained under observation Friday in stable condition.

Detectives with the Bartow Police Department are working with the Polk County School Board on the case.

Police aren't releasing more details because of the ages of the players.
