TAMPA, Fla. – With just 9 days before Election Day, early voting is in full swing.

A steady stream of voters cast their ballots in Hillsborough County on Sunday.

People came and went all morning at the Jan Kaminis Platt Regional Library in Tampa, one of the busiest polling locations in the county.

"I've kind of been making a mental note - I need to do my early voting - to get that in and today was a good day," voter Eric Weinstock said.

The polls are unusually busy for a midterm election.

So far, 60,000 voters have taken advantage of early voting in the first week.

Voter turnout is about 30 percent higher than the 2014 midterm election in Hillsborough County, with nearly 115,000 mail-in ballots already received.

Election officials have noted that voters are more energized this year.

"I think so. I think people are certainly paying attention to what's going on. You know, certainly the noise out of Washington and particularly the White House. It's made people pay attention," said voter Jim Jordan.

That excitement was apparent in voters like Debbie Wells, a new Florida resident.

The first thing she did after moving? Register to vote.

"You got to vote like your life, like your future, and your children's futures, lives, depend on it," she said.

Polling sites are expected to be even busier this week, with many voters still encouraging others to make their voices heard.

"Get out there and get involved. Vote. Pay attention. Especially if you're under 30. It's going to be your world very soon," Jordan said.
