TAMPA, Fla. — If you're headed out today for the Thanksgiving holiday, you are not alone.

Wednesday is expected to be one of the busiest travel days for the Thanksgiving season.

If you're flying today, there are a few delays and cancellations nationwide but nothing major is anticipated. Tampa International Airport has reported smooth operations Wednesday with hardly any delays or cancellations. Still, airport officials say stay in touch with your airline and go to the airport early.

Meanwhile, on the road, AAA is expecting nearly 50 million people to hit the road during the holiday. That number is aided by gas prices being at a two-year low.

About 2.8 million Floridians are expected to travel for the holiday with close to 2.5 million of them by car.

On average, gas prices in Florida are $2.48 per gallon. Prices are a bit lower in the Tampa-St. Petersburg area at $2.33. And prices are even about 20 cents lower in some Bay area locations, according to the app Gas Buddy.

So what does this all mean?

It means if you are hitting the road, you will have some company. So plan ahead or even consider driving on Thursday if possible.

"Leave early if you can," said Mark Jenkins with AAA. "Try and avoid driving through major cities on major highways during rush hour. And one thing you should consider is driving on Thanksgiving Day itself.

"By that time a lot of the travelers have already made it to their destinations and so there is typically less traffic."

According to AAA, the busiest time of the day on the roads will be from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, although some traffic will build up before the lunch hour in various parts of the state.
