With music playing and a busy kitchen, dinner felt like home for Diane Elia, who between work and taking care of her mother, could use a break for Thanksgiving.

“It’s really nice. It gets me out of the house and it’s just the two of us, so we can come over and relax,” Elia said.

She and about a 100 others packed First Baptist Church of New Port Richey for its annual Thanksgiving dinner.

Pastor Jay Huddleston started the gathering five years ago to help those in the community who may be alone on the holiday.

“I think the emotional investment is hard to put a value on,” Huddleston said. “There’s something about being in the community, being with family, on a day like today. It’s a blessing to many.”

Along with the Wingman Ministry volunteering their time, the church also packed dozens of meals to bring to folks who can’t leave the house.

For those who attended like Diane, her meal at the church each year reminds her of what to be grateful for.

“Another year of being healthy. No injuries, no sickness,” Elia said.

The church also helps feed homeless people each week during the year.
