LAKE WALES, Fla. — A Polk County man is accused of shooting and killing another man on Thanksgiving.

  • Steven Hunt charged in death of Stephen Roberts
  • Hunt claims Roberts asked him to shoot hime
  • Hunt charged with 1st-degree premeditated murder

Deputies arrested 38-year-old Steven Hunt of Winter Haven on Thursday night for the shooting death of 45-year-old Stephen Roberts. They say Hunt gave two different stories in separate interviews after the incident.

A witness called 911 around 2:30 p.m. to report the shooting at 5564 Lake Buffman Road in Lake Wales.

According to the arrest affidavit, responding deputies found Roberts lying on a bed inside his home with "his arms bent and pulled up to his chest." Deputies observed two gunshot wounds to the right side of his face. They also found two spent .40 caliber shell casings near the victim and a pillow with a bullet hole through it.

According to the witness, she and Roberts drove Hunt to Walmart earlier that day and returned to Roberts' home in Lake Wales. Later that day, she told deputies she heard the two men talking and saw Roberts holding a gun as she walked to another bedroom.

While in the other room she said she heard a gunshot and then ran back to the victim's room where she saw Roberts with significant head trauma.

The witness said Hunt told her that he shot Roberts because Roberts said "he was tired of hurting all day long and he didn't want to hurt like that."

After the shooting, Hunt apparently made the witness leave with him and told her to drive to the Circle K. At some point during the drive, the witness said she believed Hunt threw the gun out of the window.

Once they got to the gas station, the witness said she was able to get away from Hunt and call 911. Deputies later found Hunt at the Pilot gas station across the street.

When deputies first made contact with Hunt, he said he was not aware of what happened at Roberts' home, according to the affidavit. The arrest report then stated that Hunt "suddenly remembered he was with the victim and the witness at the victim's home when the victim was shot."

Hunt initially told deputies that Roberts tried to give him the gun, asking Hunt to shoot him and "put him out of his misery." Hunt said Roberts eventually told him to leave the room and close the door. He said after taking a few steps down the hallway he heard a gunshot.

After hearing the gunshot, Hunt returned to the room where he said "he saw blood on the victim's face." Hunt also told deputies "the victim's chest was moving up and down like he was breathing." Hunt told deputies he then picked up the gun and "pulled the trigger two or three times, but the gun did not fire." He told deputies he pulled the trigger again and said the gun did fire but he didn't know if he shot Roberts.

During a later interview with deputies, Hunt gave a different explanation of what happened. Hunt still claimed that Roberts asked Hunt to shoot him, but said that he did not know how to use a gun. Hunt said Roberts showed him how to shoot the gun and afterward, Hunt said Roberts laid down with a pillow over his head and Hunt shot him. Hunt said he also believes he fired another shot at Roberts after the witness said he was still breathing.

Hunt, who has a criminal history of 16 felonies, was charged with first-degree premeditated murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. His most recent arrest was November 7 for battery domestic violence and was released on probation last week.
