CITRUS COUNTY, Fla. — Teachers in Citrus County are getting some help filling their classrooms with supplies for their students thanks to a new free school store just for them.

Becky Harris said she's been pouring hundreds of her own dollars into school supplies for years.

But, thanks to the store she says this year she hasn't had to spend anything.

"I can actually give more to the students. You know, I used a lot about $100-$200, but now you can do as much as you want because we can get as many supplies as we have students," Harris said.

The Citrus County education foundation opened this free school supply store for teachers at Withlacoochee Technical College after the superintendent noticed the need in the community.  All of the supplies are donated.

"We started calling anyone and everyone we knew, any business or any community connection we could make, asking them if they would be a part of this journey of creating this store for teachers," Shaunda Burdette, Citrus County Education Foundation Executive Director, said.

Harris said in the weeks since she's started getting the school supplies, she's already seeing a change in the students she works with.

"Many times they come, they don't have paper, they don't have pens, they don't have pencils, and therefore they sit in the back and they become behavior problems, whereas when you give them something to do their work they feel valued," Harris explained.

"It's an honor to serve the teachers of Citrus County but it is just truly heartwarming to hear that the impact is happening already," Burdette added.

The store will be closing for December to restock for 2019.
