ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Crews have been working for months to revamp the southern edge of downtown Tampa.

  • Human remains found by Water Street Tampa construction crews
  • Likely date back to Fort Brooke
  • Archaeologists working to recover all of the remains
  • Water Street Tampa

And as work continues on the Water Street Tampa project, workers have uncovered what appears to be human remains.

According to the Tampa Bay Times, project officials have confirmed that a number of human remains have been found.

The bodies may date back to the 1830s, when what is now downtown Tampa was home to Fort Brooke, an Army post first established in the early 1800s.

Archaeologists are now working to recover all of the remains.

City officials said the recovery of the remains will not delay construction.

The $3 billion, 50-acre project will bring parks, hotels, office buildings, retail, housing, shops and restaurants to what has been the Channelside area of downtown along with a new University of South Florida medical school anchoring the development.
