Christopher L. Harvey, 31, of Port Orange, a Division of Corrections sergeant, turned himself into the Volusia Sheriff's Office Operations Center in Daytona Beach on Tuesday, where he was taken into custody, a Sheriff's spokesman said in a statement.

The investigation began in October, after an inmate reported witnessing the sexual encounter between Harvey and the female inmate at the correctional facility on Indian Lake Road in Daytona Beach, the statement said. The witness said it happened in a laundry room while Harvey was supervising a laundry detail.

Harvey is charged with sexual misconduct between a detention facility employee and an inmate.

He was to be held on $5,000 bond at the Flagler County jail because of his prior employment with Volusia County, the Sheriff's Office said.
