PALM HARBOR, Fla. — East Lake High School's principal is reviewing Wednesday's crash near the school that left a student hospitalized with serious injuries.

Also, the crash will be examined during a county-wide transportation safety meeting after school officials received multiple emails from families concerned with student safety on this portion of East Lake Road.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash happened just before 7 a.m. as East Lake High student Janeva Buczynski was riding a bicycle to school.

Troopers said Buczynski rode her bike into the path of a 4-door Saturn sedan being driven by a 51-year-old Holiday woman.

School officials say her family is optimistic she will recover.

Now, school officials are making sure students are as safe as possible and reminding them to use extra caution when they are crossing busy roads.

"Always keep an eye on the road and the cars moving around you because anything could happen on this road it’s one of the most dangerous roads in East Lake," said student Jasmine Cullen. "So just like always be on the lookout."

Crossing guards were out in force around East Lake high and middle schools Thursday morning.
