ORLANDO, Fla. -- An Orlando mother sat down with Spectrum News 13 after she says her child who suffers from a rare disability was injured at an area charter school.

  • Woman says school didn't notify her of son's injury
  • Incident happened at UCP Pine Hills Charter School
  • School says additional training is being provided to staff

Essence Gordon also says no one with the school reached out to her to inform her of her child's injury.

"I feel like I've been let down to be honest," Gordon said.

Gordon is calling for change after she says school leaders at UCP Pine Hills Charter School failed to notify her when her six year-old son Ahmir was injured at school.  At the time, his teacher was helping him with his walker.

"In the midst of her trying to assist him, he fell and lost his balance and he hit his head on the door frame," Gordon said.

Gordon says her son, who was born with a rare condition that affects his mobility, uses the walker to help get around. She wants to make sure parents are always notified about any incident that occurs with their child.

"I want to be able to advocate for other children who may not be able to speak or say what may be going on with them if someone is not tending to their needs the way that they need to be tended to," Gordon said.

School leaders declined to do an interview with Spectrum News 13 but did provide a statement that says the school co-operated with DCF and opened an internal investigation into the incident. The statement goes on to say that the incident "was not handled according to UCP's incident report standards and policies."

"Corrective action has been taken and additional training has been provided to the staff," continued the statement.

Gordon says she is still working with school leaders on getting her son transferred to another school.
