Crews working on an underground cable installation accidentally struck an 8-inch gas main in the vicinity of the 3100 block of McMullen Booth Road around 1 p.m. Monday, according to city officials. Crews from Clearwater Gas System reportedly responded to the scene immediately and began repairs.

No customers lost gas service, according to city officials. The area south of Briar Creek was evacuated as a precaution.

"There was a daycare next door to McMullen Booth which we assisted evacuating," said Safety Harbor Fire Department Chief Josh Stefancic. "There were some local businesses that voluntarily evacuated from their offices and then we asked residents to shelter in place."

McMullen Booth Road was shut down in both directions between Curlew Road and State Road 580 for several hours as crews worked on repairs. The northbound lanes re-opened around 6:20 p.m.
