LACOOCHEE, Fla. — The Pasco County School Board continues to discuss the possibility of closing Lacoochee Elementary.

  • School board debating the idea of closing Lacoochee Elementary
  • Enrollment at rural school down 50 percent in last decade
  • If closed, remaining students would be moved to Cox Elementary

On Tuesday evening, a school board meeting will be held to further discuss the idea.

Pasco Schools Superintendent Kurt Browning is asking the school board to close the school, citing inefficiencies and declining enrollment.

According to school officials, Lacoochee's average daily attendance, including prekindergarten, has declined from 635 in 2006-07 to its current 313.

Some board members have expressed concerns about the plan, which includes reassigning children to Cox Elementary - about seven miles to the south in Dade City.

Board members said they need to consider bus routes, enrollment trends and other factors. Officials have not said what will happen to the school buildings if the closure is eventually approved.

The meeting is at 6 p.m. at the district headquarters in Land O'Lakes.
