NATIONWIDE -- Penny Marshall, the actress and director best known for Laverne and Shirley and A League of Their Own has died, according to reports. She was 75.

Marshall died Monday night in her California home from complications from diabetes, her publicist told media outlets.

Marshall became famous for her role as Laverne DeFazio on the 1970s sitcom Laverne and Shirley, a spinoff of the popular sitcom Happy Days, which was created by her brother Garry Marshall. 

Marshall later found success behind the camera, directing films like 1988's Big, which starred Tom Hanks. The film earned more than $100 million at the box office, a first for a female director. With 1990's Awakenings, starring Robert De Niro and Robin Williams, Marshall became the second woman to direct a film nominated for a Best Picture Oscar. 

She went on to direct A League of Their Own, The Preacher's Wife and Riding in Cars with Boys

Marshall also produced a number of films, including Cinderella Man, starring Russell Crowe, and Bewitched, starring Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrell. 

Most recently, Marshall directed episodes of various TV series, including According to Jim and United States of Tara.
