DAVENPORT, Fla. — The severe weather that swept across Polk County on Thursday included two confirmed tornadoes, flood advisories, heavy rain and winds.

  • 7 tornado warnings, 2 confirmed tornadoes in Polk
  • Woman injured when storm tore off roof of Lake Wales home
  • Lightning strike sets Davenport home on fire
  • RECAP of Thursday's strong weather

A 90-year-old woman was taken to a hospital after a roof fell on her during a heavy rainstorm.

Plenty of debris will need to be cleaned up today after damage was left in Fort Meade, Davenport, and Lake Wales.

In Davenport, lightning struck the garage of a house, sparking a fire that tore through the home.

In Lake Wales, a tornado ripped off the roof at a quadplex in Crooked Lake Park near Warner University. That tornado also blew out windows, shifted a vehicle and sent a woman to a hospital.

"I was sitting in the living room in my chair, and all of a sudden, boom, the windows blew out, and everything comes crashing down on top of us," Al Weddle said.

He said the encounter was scarier than his time in World War II.

There was a total of seven tornado warnings Thursday in Polk County. In addition, several areas had trees and power lines knocked down.
