BRADENTON, Fla. — The Manatee County Sheriff's Office is investigating the accidental drowning of a 3-year-old boy.

  • 3 year old accidentally drowns in pool at Bradenton home
  • Toddler got out of "pack and play," wandered to pool area
  • Mother discovered son in the bottom of the pool

The incident occurred at a home on Street West in Bradenton.

The victim's mother, great-grandmother, and great-grandfather were home at the time of the drowning.

The great-grandmother, Gloria Howard, 67, told investigators that she got up with Kayden Bond, 3, Friday morning and made him a bottle before she fell back asleep on the couch.

A short time later, she said she got back up with Bond to give him a second bottle.  After feeding him, she left him in his "pack and play" while she dozed back off again on the couch, the report stated.

Shortly after when the great-grandfather, Peter Howard, 67, was making breakfast, he said he realized he hadn't seen Bond yet.  He went to check in the "pack and play" for Bond, who was not in there, and realized the rear slider leading to the pool was open, according to the report.

Investigators were told that Bond's mother, Samantha Howard, 25, was awoken by the commotion and ran out to the pool area where she found the victim at the bottom of the pool.  She jumped in and recovered the victim.

When deputies arrived on scene they attempted CPR.  The victim was transported to Manatee Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

Investigators said it appears to be an accidental drowning.
