PORT RICHEY, Fla. — Protesters clashed with supporters — drawing deputies and police — outside a Florida bookstore Saturday morning that hosts a "Drag Queen Story Hour."

The Paperback Exchange Bookstore was hosting its second Drag Queen Story Hour.

Protesters showed up by the busload outside the bookstore. They ran into even more supporters of the store, like Steven Page, and things started to escalate.

"It was interesting," Page said. "They wanted to get their point across and be heard, they were just loud and obnoxious about it."

All of that went on outside, while inside the store Stephanie Stuart read to kids for the Drag Queen Story Hour.

"Being able to reach out to these children and let them know that if I can sit in front of you as a 53-year old drag queen, and read children’s stories to you, there is nothing in this world you can’t do yourself," Stuart said.

This was Stuart's second time at the store, and both times it brought out protesters.

Store owner Joan Hepsworth still supports the event since it’s been a success at other places across the country.

"We’re evolving," Hepsworth said. "I don’t think we’re going to stop."

Pasco County Sheriff's deputies and Port Richey Police were called to the store, and eventually the protest broke up without any arrests or serious injuries.

Stuart said she teaches the kids to ignore the noise like she does and plans to press on.

"Whatever the plan on doing, fine," Stuart said.  "You’re not going to stop my drag queen story hour."

The bookstore is moving the next story hour to the first Sunday of the month instead of Saturday, so that nearby businesses won’t be as affected by any protests.
