LARGO, Fla. — Police in Largo say a man tried to open a locked bank, tried to rob a second bank a few minutes later, then returned to the first bank and was arrested.

The incidents occurred Wednesday morning.

According to investigators, 36-year-old Ronald Joseph Massey went to Bank of American on Indian Rocks Road at about 8:20 a.m. The bank had not opened.

Massey, who police say was wearing a mask, tried to open the door, then left the scene on a bicycle. Bank employees called police.

Just after 9 a.m., Massey went inside a BB&T location on Walsingham Road, and was armed with a knife when he entered the lobby, police said.

The tellers were behind safety glass and vacated their area to call police. Massey left the scene.

Police said he returned to Bank of America, went inside still wearing a mask and carrying a knife, and was taken into custody by an officer who responded to the first incident.

Massey was charged with armed robbery, attempted armed robbery and violation of probation for armed robbery.

He had been released from prison on Jan. 10 on prior convictions that including bank robberies.
