TAMPA, Fla. — House Democratic leadership is set to pass a series of funding measures designed to reopen the federal government, Rep. Kathy Castor (14th District) said Tuesday.

The move is in response to the government shutdown which has left 800,000 federal workers without a paycheck.

The shutdown was triggered by a fight over funding a wall across the U.S. Mexico border.

Castor, along with Rep. Charlie Crist (13th District) held a press conference Tuesday at Tampa International Airport.

"It's completely untenable to be forced to come to work and not get paid," said Castor. "We're going to pass a set of bills that are the Republican bills that were negotiated by Republicans and Democrats in the House and the Senate."

Several federal workers including air traffic controllers and prison personnel joined the Democrats in calling for the government to be re-opened.

"Both parties need to get together, knock off the bickering, sit down and negotiate until the wee hours of the morning so we can get our paychecks and go back to work," said Joe Rojas of the Bureau of Prisons.

A Trump-backed bill opening the government is expected to come before the Senate for a vote later this week.
