LARGO, Fla. – A Largo man was arrested on Tuesday for felony child abuse involving great bodily harm for breaking a 4-month-old baby's leg, according to police.

  • Gregory Hesse said baby was injured after being removed from a bouncer chair
  • The baby boy also had bruising on his face, police said

Gregory Hesse, 34, told detectives the baby was injured on Saturday afternoon when he removed the child from a bouncer chair, according to an arrest affidavit.

Hesse stated that he pulled at the child multiple times and heard a pop while the infant began crying. Hesse waited for his wife to come home before taking the baby to the hospital.

Neighbors said Hesse is the baby's father.

Largo Police said the 4-month-old boy suffered a spiral displaced fracture to the right femur and on the child's face there was bruising in the shape of a hand that's consistent with a slap.

"I honestly don't even know how to put it into words," neighbor Danielle Hardin said. "It just ticks me off so bad to think that somebody could do that to a baby."

Medical professionals told Largo police the fracture was consistent with abuse. Hardin said she has a seven-month-old baby girl who uses a bouncer chair and doesn't believe Hesse's story.

"There's no way that that could happen in a bouncy chair or a jumper," she said. "No child at all, not matter the age, should be treated like that."

Hesse was booked into the Pinellas Jail without a bond.
