CITRUS COUNTY, Fla. — Some residents in Citrus Hills spent today cleaning up after strong winds this morning damaged multiple homes in the area.

What would otherwise be a quiet Thursday morning near the Citrus Hills Golf and Country Club was anything but quiet today, as people worked to clean up several downed trees.

“We heard the rain and the wind and just thought it was another thunderstorm,” John Boyden said.

Boyden and his wife have been staying at a family member’s house in Citrus Hills for about a month. He said they were fast asleep when the storm came through between 4:30 a.m and 4:45 a.m.

"This window just exploded," Boyden explained. "I mean, that's exactly what it sounded like — an explosion."

The house Boyden was in received some of the worst damage in the area. The wind caused the pool enclosure to crumble and shingles were ripped off the roof.

“We had one of the chairs go flying through our window,” said neighbor Cary Jensen.

Jensen had some damage, too. Part of the stonework on the edge of his pool was ripped off, outdoor fans snapped, and the area under his deck was torn apart.

“It sounded like a huge hail storm, because a lot of debris was hitting our windows,” Jensen explained.

“We sleep to the sound of rain and forest and thunder and lightning, and I thought that’s what it was at first, that my volume control had gotten out of control,” he added.

Despite the damage, both families are still able to stay in their homes. They all say they're just glad no one was hurt.

“I’ve never been through anything like this. I’ve been here quite some time,” Jensen said.

Spectrum Bay News 9 meteorologists said the winds in that area were around 70 mph.
