The family was in a 24-foot recreational open bay boat when the boat struck a channel marker, causing Carter to be thrown into the water.

The nine-year-old was wearing a life vest at the time of the accident, according to investigators. He was first transported to Seven Rivers Hospital, and then to Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries Saturday.

Carter's father, Richard, was also transported to Seven Rivers Hospital. His current condition is not known.
