SARASOTA, Fla. — Police say someone spray painted a well-known statue located in downtown Sarasota.

The incident occurred overnight when someone vandalized the Unconditional Surrender Statue.

The statue is based off a famous photo taken just after World War II. The sailor in that iconic photo, George Mendonsa, died Sunday at 95.

The culprits who spray-painted the Sarasota statue wrote #METOO on a leg of the statue.

The paint was removed Tuesday morning by Sarasota crews.
