TAMPA, Fla. — Harrowing scenes of violence, riots, and starvation - the bleak reality for Venezuelans under the Maduro regime.

Millions have escaped the violence by fleeing into Colombia, where they end up homeless, scouring the streets for scraps of food.

Tampa nonprofit Course of Action is teaming up with several other organizations in Tampa, Miami, and Texas to bring some much needed aid to the Colombian border.

“Malnutrition is one of the biggest problems that the refugees are having in Colombia and we’re tackling that effort,” said E.J. Otero, Course of Action Foundation president.

Otero’s organization is working with All American Music, Inc., Caminos de Esperanza, and iHeart Media to deliver food to the Colombian border.

“[The crisis] has evolved from one that is purely political to one which is now humanitarian. Now people are dying,” Otero said.

Texas organization Breedlove donated large shipments of dehydrated food. It’s a blend of grains and vegetables, packed with protein.

One little packet of food can feed up to 12 people once you add water.

Now the groups just need help to raise money to ship the food to Cucuta, Colombia.

“Venezuela is losing a generation of people, of hardworking people, to the problem of malnutrition,” Otero said.

They started a GoFundMe and hope to raise $20,000 in the next few weeks.

“We need to commit ourselves to that, and I know that the people of Tampa, and the people of Florida once again will aid us,” Otero said.
