ANCLOTE KEY, Fla. — Two boaters are being called Good Samaritans after rescuing other boaters from a sinking pontoon.

Spectrum Bay News 9 first told you about this on Sunday, when the Pasco County Sheriff's Office helped rescue 13 people off of Anclote Key.

But minutes before deputies arrived, brothers Martin and Joseph Smith saw the pontoon going down.

"I looked at their boat and the nose was almost completely up in the air. I was thinking, 'Man, they're sinking. I have to turn around,'" Martin said.

Joseph was riding behind him on a jet ski, taking advantage of the same waves that sank the pontoon.

"I came up on them on my jet ski and realized that they were taking on water. They all moved to one side of the boat and it dipped low. I thought, 'That boat is definitely going down,'" Joseph said.

The two rushed into action, helping to bring three of the 13 onto Martin's boat before deputies got there.

"It was panic. You see people panic over everyday things, but when a boat is sinking, it's a whole different type of panic," Joseph said.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commissions says the boat was rented from the Carefree Boat Club in Tarpon Springs. The business declined an interview, but an employee said the boaters knew what the conditions were and that they were only supposed to have eight people on the boat.

The Smith brothers say they don't even usually go boating in the Anclote River but they're relieved that they were at the right place, at the right time.

"That was probably the craziest day of my life. Definitely a crazy day on the water that day," Martin said.

Everyone taken out of the water ended up being OK. FWC continues to investigate.
