HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. — A man was killed Wednesday when a coworker tripped while getting out of a truck, discharging a gun, Hillsborough County investigators say.

The incident happened at a home construction site on the 8900 block of Riverlachen Way, the Sheriff's Office said.

Deputies got a call about a shooting there at about 1:45 p.m.

Witnesses told investigators that said the man who fired the shot was getting out of a truck and transitioning a gun between his waistband and his pocket.

Then he reportedly slipped on some construction material and fell, causing the gun to go off.

"Detectives have to work that process of the shooting, but there are some marks substantiating his story to us so far," said Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office's Major Frank Losat.

Another construction worker was struck by the shot. He was transported from the scene to a hospital, where he died.

Deputies said one of the witnesses to the shooting was the son of the man handling the gun, and that the man who was killed was a longtime friend of their family.

The man who fired the shot is cooperating with the investigation, according to the agency.

A homicide investigation is now underway. So far no charges have been filed.

On Sunday, a man was shot while standing at a cash register at a Land O'Lakes Publix when his wife dropped her purse, and a Derringer inside discharged. He was struck in the leg.
