SPRING HILL, Fla. — A Spring Hill man accused of dragging a dog down the roadway last week has been arrested.

  • Gregory Tousignant, 58, arrested in dog dragging case
  • Tousignant said to have dragged dog behind truck
  • Witnesses say man appeared to be unaware dog jumped out of truck

On Friday, May 3, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office received a call of a dog being dragged behind a green Ford F-150 down Northcliffe Boulevard in Spring Hill.

Witnesses told detectives the dog was tied to the truck's back bumper by a piece of rope that was attached to the dog's collar.

Detectives said the 1-year-old pit bull terrier mix was able to free itself from the collar and someone at the scene tended to the injured dog.  Officials said the dog is expected to make a full recovery.

During the investigation detectives were able to identify the dog's owner as 58-year-old Gregory Tousignant, who witnesses said appeared to be unaware that the dog had jumped out of the bed of his truck.

Detectives said it is illegal to carry any pet in the bed of truck that is not properly secured and prevented from jumping out of the moving vehicle.  An active warrant was issued for Tousignant's arrest.

On Wednesday, May 8, deputies spotted Tousignant's vehicle in the area of Commercial Way and the Outback Steakhouse.

After conducting a traffic stop, deputies discovered Tousignant did not have a valid driver's license.  He was arrested for the active warrant along with driving with a suspended license.  He is being held on a $1,500 bond.
