TAMPA, Fla. — The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office wants to hear from undocumented immigrants who may have been defrauded of thousands of dollars by a man pretending to be their attorney.

Elvis Reyes of Brandon is accused of stealing money from at least 100 undocumented immigrants after he allegedly told them he was a licensed immigration attorney. That turned out to be false.

Although several alleged victims of Reyes have come forward, many others have not, presumably amid concern they’ll be deported.

Sheriff Chad Chronister says he is not going to report anyone to immigration authorities.

“We wanted to focus on encouraging individuals to come forward,” said Chronister. “A victim is a victim regardless of their immigration status.”

Reyes has not been charged in connection to this alleged fraud. He has not returned our emails for comment and his voicemail is full.

The Sheriff’s office set up a hotline for anyone with any information to report immigration scams. That number is (813) 247-8494.
