PLANT CITY, Fla. — A 9-year-old girl was killed when an ATV overturned on Saturday night in Plant City, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.

  • Vehicle was driven by an 11-year-old girl
  • The ATV rolled over; 9-year-old was ejected

At around 8 p.m. on the 6000 block of Varn Road, an 11-year-old girl was driving a Can-Am Commander, which is similar to a dune buggy with two-bucket seats, on private property, according to Crystal Clark, the Sheriff's Office public affairs coordinator.

The girl had a 9-year-old female passenger in the vehicle when the young driver tried to turn it around and she lost control, with the ATV overturning, Clark stated in a news release.

Neither of the girls were wearing a seatbelt and the driver was able to climb out from under the ATV, but the passenger was ejected.

The Hillsborough County Fire Rescue responded and took the girls to the South Florida Baptist Hospital, where the 9-year-old girl was pronounced dead, stated Clark.

The 11-year-old girl suffered minor injuries.
