CITRUS COUNTY, Fla. — Citrus County Animal Services has temporarily closed its shelter due to an unknown, highly contagious upper respiratory infection, officials have confirmed.

All animals in the shelter are currently receiving medical supportive care and strict isolation protocols have been implemented, according to the shelter.

Veterinarians at the shelter are working with vets from the University of Florida Maddie's Shelter Medicine Program, who are experts in the field of shelter illnesses, to ensure the animals are receiving the proper care.

The shelter is encouraging all animal owners to keep close tabs on their pets and ensure they have some form of ID with the owner's current contact info, as to keep as many animals out of the shelter as possible.

Samples of the infection have been set to the lab for testing, but results have not yet been received, the shelter said.

It will remain closed until further notice.
