  • Cheyanne Jessie accused of killing daughter, father in 2015
  • Bodies found in storage shed behind Jessie's home
  • Prosecutors to seek death penalty if Jessie's convicted of 1st-degree

Jessie is accused of killing her 6-year-old daughter and 50-year-old father in 2015.

The victims' bodies were found in a storage shed behind Jessie's home while she was out of town.

At the time of Jessie's arrest, detectives said the motive for killing her daughter was to appease a boyfriend who threatened to break up with her over the child's behavior.

Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty if Jessie is convicted of first-degree murder.

DAY 1 & 2:

The trial for a Lakeland woman accused of killing her father and six-year-old daughter in 2015 is underway.

Testimony continues Wednesday in the double murder trial.

Cheyanne Jessie is charged with two counts of first-degree murder.

Prosecutors said she stabbed her daughter Meredith in the throat and shot her 50-year-old father, Mark Weekly, in the head on July 18 in his rented home in Lakeland.

Two days later officials said she returned and hid their bodies in a neighbor's shed for two weeks before filing a missing person's report.

According to an arrest report, Jessie told detectives she got into a physical altercation with Weekly and he pulled out a knife. She said Meredith ran to help when Weekly stabbed her in the throat. Jessie then said she shot Weekly in self defense.

Testimony today will focus on the stories Jessie allegedly told family and friends about where the victims were when no one heard from them.

Weekly's family said they aren't surprised Jessie was arrested for the killings.

"When they said they found Mark and Meredith, that they were murdered, I said Cheyanne did it," Gaye Weekly, Mark Weekly's sister-in-law, said.
