ODESSA, Fla. — The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office is investigating an overnight fatal shooting that appears to be a result of an ongoing family squabble.

  • Man dead after being shot after breaking into relative's home
  • Homeowner shot man late Wednesday night
  • Investigators said victim, family members had ongoing feud

Deputies were called to a home in the 10000 block of Grove Lane in Odessa just after 11 p.m. Wednesday.

The resident told deputies he shot an intruder that was attempting to break into his home. The wounded man died at the scene after breaking a back window to get into the home, authorities said.

Deputies said the man killed was related to the resident but lived out of state. The suspect got into a confrontation with the resident, who ultimately shot him, authorities said.

Authorities said there is a history of domestic violence between the deceased and others residing at the home. Three other adults, an elderly female family member and two adult friends of the shooter, were inside the home at the time of the incident.

The shooter is cooperating with detectives. No arrests have been made at this time. The Sheriff's Office will be consulting with the State Attorney's Office to determine if the Stand Your Ground law applies in this case.

The identity of the man killed has not been released as of yet.
