The crash occurred around 12:25 p.m. near the intersection of Moog Road and Pinehurst Drive. 77-year old Larry Small was killed while riding his motorized wheelchair in the crosswalk.

Troopers said an older model red minivan hit the wheelchair and then took off.

Small lived nearby and neighbors said he was always seen riding his wheelchair.

“Horrible what happened,” said neighbor Craig Smith. “I used to see him all of the time going up and down the road in his wheelchair. Great gentleman. Great personality. For someone to leave a man lying in the middle of the road is just horrible.”

Investigators closed the road for several hours. Later Monday, troopers recovered the minivan and said they were interviewing a person of interest in the crash.

No further information has been released.
